North American mills report lower throughput, supporting prices in lumber futures today, as export orders from Asia strengthen. The Office of Management and Budget has advised agencies to "execute their plans for an orderly shutdown" after both a Republican and Democratic proposal to avoid a government shutdown failed. The government will now shut down at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Lumber prices have dropped by more than 14% from a record high in early August. Lumber futures today remain supported by tightening inventories at key distribution hubs, suggesting limited downside risk in the short term.
